Manchester United announced plans to build a new 100,000-seater stadium in March, but the project has been hit with a ‘new financial blow’

Manchester United’s plans to build a new 100,000-seater stadium are reportedly at a standstill due to a lack of government funding.

The club revealed its ambitious plans in March, shortly after co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who acquired a minority stake in February 2024, said he wanted to build a new building on the same site as Old Trafford to replace the 115-year-old historic ground. The Mirror reports that club officials estimate the new stadium will cost £2 billion.

Mr Ratcliffe had hoped the project could be partly funded through the government’s Trafford Park regeneration scheme, which is backed by First Minister Rachel Reeves. However, according to the i Paper, the Treasury will not allocate any funds for the stadium, with the next budget expected to focus on tax increases.

Additionally, United’s plans to raise government funds are said to have stalled since the beginning of the year. Treasury officials are said to have discussed regeneration and housing plans for the area with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, but there has been no “formal engagement” with United Council or Trafford Council.

The Government has already committed £600m to Greater Manchester in 2025-26 through the combined settlement with the West Midlands and Greater Manchester Combined Authority, announced a year ago.

However, it appears that no additional funding specifically for the redevelopment of Old Trafford is currently planned. United have made it clear they are not seeking public funding for the stadium itself, which is estimated to cost between £2bn and £3bn, but government support will be essential to realize their wider regeneration plans.

In addition to these delays, United Airlines has also been unable to secure the rail cargo terminal near Old Trafford needed to begin construction work.

The club offered £50m to buy the land, but the terminal’s owner and operator, Freightliner, is holding out for £400m, a figure the Reds consider “unrealistic”.

Last month, United Airlines was reported to have held “constructive” negotiations with Freightliner, saying it hoped to reach an agreement “in the coming months.” If the deal goes through, United will be able to move forward with plans for a new stadium complex designed by Sir Norman Foster.

The new stadium will bring significant social and economic benefits to the local community, including an estimated 92,000 jobs and more than 17,000 new homes.

It is also predicted to attract an additional 1.8 million tourists and provide a £7.3 billion annual boost to the UK economy.
