Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastre has been in the news for her cruel comments about Mary Earps. Earps’ new autobiography includes explosive claims about former teammate Hannah Hampton
Mary Earps has responded to Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastre’s brutal comments, insisting she did not intend to “deliberately hurt” anyone. Mr Earps, 32, was accused by Mr Bompastre of showing a “lack of respect” for former Lionesses team-mate Hannah Hampton and England manager Sarina Wigman in a series of explosive claims in his new autobiography.
After serving as Earps’ backup when the Lionesses won the European Women’s Championship in 2022, Hampton was left out of the subsequent squad by Wiegman. This was reportedly due to her poor attitude.
When Hampton was eventually recalled, Earps felt that “a bad act had paid off.” The Paris Saint-Germain star added in his ongoing book for the Guardian: “I felt that the good energy I got from the goalkeeping training and the morale of the wider team was protected.”
Earps continued to be England’s number one player at the 2023 World Cup, but was dethroned by Hampton the following year. The Chelsea shot-stopper played a key role in the Lionesses’ victory at Euro 2025 this summer, but Arps announced his retirement from international football before the start of the tournament after being informed by Wiegmann.
The 32-year-old’s comments were made ahead of Chelsea’s 2-0 win over London City Lionesses in the Women’s Super League on Saturday. In the post-match press conference, Bompastre fiercely defended Hampton’s character and lashed out at Earps, to which Earps responded.

“Being as vulnerable and open as I have been in this book is not easy. I understand that my honesty and rawness will polarize opinion,” Arps wrote on Instagram. “It’s okay, everyone has the right to feel how they feel and I respect that.
“Today things escalated quickly and women were at odds with each other. It makes me angry to be portrayed as someone I’m not. I know negative things get clicks, but it’s sad that that’s the only thing being discussed. I also said some very positive things and gave credit where credit was due.”
“I know people like to create drama, but remember, this book is about my life and my experiences. This is not a melodrama, this is real life. If you pull out a paragraph or a sentence here and there, it doesn’t reflect the content of the book. Please look at the headline and read the whole thing.
“I would never intentionally say anything that would hurt anyone. That’s not my style. Different people can experience the same situation differently. This is not a story of heroes and villains, just different points of view. More than one thing can be true at the same time.”
“Please read the full context and listen to my interview. This has been an incredibly difficult 24 hours, not just for me. I hope tomorrow will be better.”
It was not just Hampton that Mr. Arps was accused of being disrespectful, but Mr. Bonpastall’s appearance on behalf of the highly successful Mr. Wiegman. “After reading the comments from Mary Earps, it is unacceptable to show no respect for your team-mates and your manager,” the Chelsea manager said.
“We’re not just talking about Hannah, we want to speak out for Sarina. When you say something about someone who won three Euros in a row, you should probably think about it before you say it.”
“Hannah is doing well for us and the whole club, myself, the staff, the players are all rooting for her. If you look at what Hannah said in her previous comments about Mary Earp, what Mary is saying about her now, one of them is class and Hannah is class one.”
