Wolves sacked manager Vitor Pereira on Sunday and are considering pursuing former manager Gary O’Neill, who was sacked less than a year ago, with Michael Carrick also in their sights.
Wolves are considering bringing back former manager Gary O’Neill. It has been less than 11 months since he was sacked by manager Vitor Pereira, who was sacked on Sunday after finishing bottom of the Premier League.
They are the only team in the top flight without a win, with just two points from their last 10 games, and are currently searching for a new manager to replace the Portuguese coach. Pereira replaced O’Neal last season.
The former Bournemouth manager has been unemployed since leaving Molineux but is currently on the shortlist to replace him. Middlesbrough manager Rob Edwards is also a strong candidate, with Michael Carrick also considered, The Athletic reports.
O’Neal had a great first season as Timberwolves manager, but his performance slowed in his second season. Prior to his spell at the Midlands, he was in charge of Bournemouth, helping them stay in the Premier League.
These achievements will serve him well should he return to Molineux. The Wolves are already eight points behind the safety zone and are likely to fall as favorites for the championship.

Edwards is currently at Middlesbrough, who sit second in the Championship after an excellent start to the year. He promoted Luton a few years ago and has experience in the top flight. The 42-year-old made more than 100 appearances for Wolves as a defender between 2004 and 2008, working in the Wolves youth organization before taking over as caretaker manager in 2016.
Carrick is also an unemployed candidate. He was released by Middlesbrough in the summer, having been at the Riverside Stadium since October 2022. The former Manchester United manager led Middlesbrough out of the relegation zone and into the play-offs in his debut season as manager.
Wolves’ bosses are keen to make an appointment as soon as possible, but it may not be until Saturday’s next game against Chelsea, and there is a possibility that a caretaker manager will remain. Wolves have not won in the top flight since playing against Leicester in late April.
Pereira was sacked on Sunday following a 3-0 defeat at Fulham. His sacking comes just 45 days after signing a new contract with Molineux until 2028. Wolves released some of their biggest stars in the summer, namely Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait Nouri.
