Marseille’s Ligue 1 match against Angers was overshadowed by the collapse of 21-year-old midfielder Bilal Nadir just 10 minutes after coming on as a substitute in the second half.
Marseille star Bilal Nadir, 21, suffered a horrific collapse during a Ligue 1 game against Angers on Wednesday night. Medics rushed to the scene and the young midfielder appeared to have lost consciousness and was taken on a stretcher and taken to hospital.
However, the French club have now issued a reassuring medical report, confirming that Nadir “was not unconscious at the time of the incident” and is currently under observation in hospital.
They added that after examination by medical staff and emergency services, “all of his vital signs were found to be normal.” Nadir was rushed to the hospital for a “detailed examination.” The club confirmed that his condition is “good” although evaluation is continuing.
The full medical report released by Marseille on Thursday, translated from French into English, reads: “Olympique de Marseille would like to share encouraging news regarding Bilal Nadir, who suffered a health concern during yesterday’s match against SCO Angers. The player did not lose consciousness during the accident.”

“Upon attending the club’s medical staff and the emergency services on scene, all of his vital signs were found to be normal. As a precautionary measure, Bilal Nadir was taken to hospital for further tests. He is in good condition and will remain under observation pending this evaluation.”
“The club would like to thank the medical team for their response and appreciate the many messages of support from our fans. Further information will be provided as the situation develops.”
Marseille’s statement came after coach Roberto de Zerbi said in the post-match press conference that he had lost consciousness.
“He lost consciousness and was taken to hospital for tests and tests. We are all worried and hope it is nothing serious,” the Marseille manager said on Wednesday night, before the club revealed the player’s condition.
A teammate of Mason Greenwood at Marseille, Nadir has made strides in recent seasons and has become a key figure in the first team since signing from Nice in 2021.
He played two seasons in the fourth-tier B team before making his senior debut in September 2023.
The midfielder played in nine games during his breakthrough season and 16 last season. This season, he has appeared in all but one league game, mainly as a substitute, and also made his debut in the Champions League.
Morocco also called up Nadir for two World Cup qualifying matches in March. However, he did not appear in either match.
Nadir has represented internationally at youth level both in France, where he was born and raised, and in Morocco, where his parents are from. The midfielder most recently appeared in two games for the Under-23s, albeit only in friendly matches, in November 2023.
