Manchester United director of football Jason Wilcox talks about the club’s transfer business and reveals the thinking behind the deal
Jason Wilcox has confirmed Manchester United will invest further in their squad and revealed the two transfer rules the club are currently following. The Red Devils spent big in the summer transfer window, bringing in a completely new frontline and signing a new first-choice goalkeeper.
The most high-profile arrivals were Matheus Cunha, Brian Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, with Senne Ramens arriving from Royal Antwerp on deadline day. After a slow start to the season, United have recently turned a corner under manager Ruben Amorim, winning their last three Premier League games and moving into sixth place in the table.
And Wilcox revealed that United will invest further to challenge for major honours, but warned that the new players will only have the right character and add something different. “Yeah, the players have settled in really, really quickly. If you look at Matheus and Brian in particular, I think they were able to transition faster because they played in the Premier League and lived in England,” he said.
“With Benji and Sene, if you look at their transition, I think they’ve transitioned very well. We’re really happy. They’re two young players, two players of the future, but they’ve settled in surprisingly well.”
“From what we saw last summer, they’re all good guys, top pros, top players, and we’re really optimistic that we’re going in the right direction.

“We have a clear plan. We know there will be bumps in the road, but we just need to make sure we stay calm, regardless of the noise outside.
“I see that intensity and I’m at training every day and I see the way they train, the way they present themselves, the way they communicate and get along with each other.
“Like I said, it’s always a bit disappointing when you lose a football match, but especially at this club.”
However, despite United’s impressive run of form, Wilcox revealed that both he and Amorim agree that now is not the time to get complacent. “We have a clear plan. We know what we have to do and the areas where the team has to improve.
“If we are to be in the top four and continue to challenge for Champions League qualification, win the Champions League and win the Premier League, we have to invest in the team. We have to get the right players.
“The right players who are not only talented, but can handle pressure and take the team forward. You don’t just always sign elite talent, they have to be people with the right character and who can bring something different to the team.”
“We’re really happy with where we are and we know we have to improve. And the players are never satisfied, Ruben is never happy and I’m never happy. That’s how we are.”
“We’re always looking to improve. I’m sure everyone who works at Manchester United thinks the same way, and they think the same way given the standards we promote every day.”
