Tottenham have suffered another injury ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash with Newcastle United.
Tottenham star Archie Gray is likely to be sidelined as manager Thomas Frank becomes the 10th first-team player to miss the game through injury. The 19-year-old former Leeds midfielder was in contention to start against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup at St James’ Park on Wednesday night.
However, it is understood that the versatile youngster suffered an injury during training and will not play in the game. Although the seriousness of the problem has not been officially confirmed, reports suggest the highly-rated star has suffered a calf injury that could keep him out for around a month.
This is a significant setback for Gray, who could have started in his preferred midfield role on Wednesday night. Last season, Frank was used in defense under coach Ange Postecoglou, and Frank has also relied on his versatility.

This setback reduced Frank’s number of first-team players to ten. Football London reports that Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogi, Ben Davies, Radu Dragusin, Kota Takai, Yves Bissouma, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison and Dominic Solanke are currently unavailable for Spurs.
Meanwhile, Frank wants Tottenham to go all the way in the Carabao Cup this season, but questions why the semi-finals were still two-legged.
Spurs face holders Newcastle in the fourth round on Wednesday, hoping to stay on track for another silver medal after ending a 17-year drought with Europa League success in May under Frank’s predecessor Postecoglou.
Tottenham’s busy schedule of 60 games in 2024-25, with a midweek trip to St James’ Park for the 15th game of the season, has led Frank to propose a shake-up of the often-scrutinized domestic competition in the ever-expanding football calendar.
Frank suggested, “By the way, something I’ve been thinking about is that there should only be one semifinal.”
He explained the reason as follows: “I think there are two reasons. For a small club, if you want to beat a big club, it’s much easier to play just one game, so we really want someone to break out, and it’s not the same boring same team winning – except for Spurs, of course!”
He continued: “So for everyone else who plays a lot of games, we have to skip one semi-final. It should only be one.”
Regarding the financial impact, he said: “If it’s a money issue, someone has to fix it. If the Premier League is paying the EFL (English Football League), then as far as I understand it, that’s the fault. So someone has to fix it. It should be very simple.”
