After a huge scuffle on the pitch, riot police are called in and the cup match descends into chaos | Soccer | Sports

A soccer match in the Netherlands descended into chaos as riot police stormed the pitch to break up a brawl between two groups of supporters. This unusual scene took place during the Dutch Cup match between Den Bosch and Den Haag. The first round of matches was tense, but things boiled over in the second half, requiring police intervention.

In the 57th minute, with Den Haag leading 3-2, anger erupted between two sets of supporters. According to local reports, Den Bosch fans were furious as visiting supporters tried to storm the pitch. A few players managed to break through and start making their way towards the away end, but others were stopped by the stewards.

However, the situation continued to get out of control, with fireworks being thrown onto the pitch as clashes between the rioters and the stewards continued.

A squad of police officers with batons and riot shields eventually became involved. Some police officers had dogs, and one video showed a fan being bitten on the leg. It was also reported that a steward suffered a bite wound to his hand.

The situation was so hopelessly out of control that the local mayor also got involved and ordered the match to be suspended until The Hague’s fans were removed from the stadium.

After a crazy 90 minutes, order was finally restored and the match was allowed to continue. After equalizing, Den Bosch won on penalties and qualified for the second round of the Dutch Cup.

Violence in soccer has become a problem in the Netherlands in recent years, with Dutch Minister of Justice Dilan Ecilgos describing it in a letter to parliament in 2023 as a “multi-headed monster that is not easy to eradicate.”

Jan Brouwer, a law professor at the University of Groningen who specializes in football violence research, previously said the increase in reports of disorder meant the problem was “getting worse”.

He said one of the reasons behind the surge in violence was a change in the hierarchy of hardcore, so-called “ultra” football hooligans.

“Many people at the top got tired of it and left, while at the bottom there were a lot of young new supporters,” he told public broadcaster NOS.

“There’s a certain kind of anarchy going on right now and they’re hungry for a bit of resistance now after being banned from stadiums (during the pandemic).”
