Trent Alexander-Arnold is likely to start against his former club after suffering a serious injury ahead of Real Madrid’s Champions League match against Liverpool in November.
Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal will miss the Champions League match against Liverpool and other matches due to injury, so Trent Alexander-Arnold could start against Liverpool. The defender is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, which could keep him sidelined for the remainder of 2025.
The Spain international felt uncomfortable after Madrid’s El Clasico win against Barcelona on Sunday. Carvajal came on as a substitute in the second half of his team’s 2-1 win and underwent tests on Monday morning to assess the injury.
Madrid reportedly believe the right-back will be out for more than six weeks and could be out until January 2026. The La Liga giants will face Liverpool on November 4th. “As a result of the tests carried out on captain Dani Carvajal by Real Madrid’s medical services, it has been determined that the joint in his right knee is loosened,” the club said in a statement on Monday night.

“Carvajal will undergo arthroscopy.” Carvajal’s latest setback was in the same knee in which he tore two ligaments and a tendon in October 2024, which caused him to miss the remainder of last season.
The 33-year-old’s injury absence also increases the chances of Liverpool academy product Trent Alexander-Arnold starting against his former club. The versatile full-back left Anfield in the summer to join Madrid.
Alexander-Arnold has made 10 appearances for Real Madrid so far, but his career in Spain ultimately got off to a shaky start. The 27-year-old injured his hamstring early in his new team’s 2-1 Champions League win over Marseille in mid-September.
His recovery from the hamstring problem has progressed well so far and it is understood he could be fit to play against the Reds next month. The England international was included in Madrid’s squad for the match against Barça at the weekend.
Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said after the match: “We are working on the assumption that every player in the team can be a starter. After that, it depends on the mental, tactical and physical aspects, but everyone can play.”
Madrid return to action against Valencia in La Liga on Saturday before visiting Merseyside three days later.
