Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is reportedly determined to coach Matheus Cunha so he becomes an Old Trafford legend. Cunha, who joined from Wolves in the summer, had a difficult start to life with the Red Devils. In fact, he failed to score or assist in his first eight games and even missed a game with a hamstring injury before the first international break.
However, he finally ended his scoreless streak and scored his first goal in Saturday’s 4-2 win over United. Cunha scored the first goal of the match, curling the ball from the edge of the box into the bottom corner of the goal. Now, it has been reported that Fernandes played a key role in helping Cunha deal with the pressures of being a United player.
According to The Sun, he has taken the forward under his wing and the two share a strong bond due to their shared Portuguese.
Fernandes and Cunha have reportedly spent countless hours in extra training sessions, honing their free-kick and set-piece skills.
Officials have suggested that coaching has helped Cunha improve his emotional control and confidence, especially during his time out with injury.
Despite failing to score or assist in United’s recent win over Liverpool, the former Wolves man showed the potential to be a key player for the Red Devils.
Cunha found the back of the net against Brighton and was highly praised by manager Ruben Amorim. Last season, he scored 17 goals in 36 games.
“He was suffering. You can hide it, but I understand that he is suffering,” Amorim said in the post-match interview.
“He shows confidence in every moment of the game. I really love the way he defends. I know a little bit of basics about it, but his reaction at Anfield is not surprising.
“It’s not surprising that he plays with the ball, but he’s growing even when he doesn’t have the ball. That’s going to be big for our team.”
“He needs to score goals. He struggled when he didn’t score, but he’s a top player who scores games. I’m really happy for him.”
