Liverpool have been warned by injury specialists that Alexander Isak could require surgery to avoid further complications. The forward is currently sidelined with a groin strain and missed last weekend’s defeat to Brentford. Liverpool signed him from Newcastle United on transfer deadline day in a deal worth £125 million.
The Sweden international has scored just one goal in eight games since joining the club, and it remains unclear when he will return. Isak was substituted during Liverpool’s win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League last week. The Reds are due to play Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, before facing Aston Villa at Anfield in the Premier League at the weekend, but it is doubtful whether Isak will feature in either game.
Liverpool have been warned they may have to consider letting Isak go to prevent further injury as they are unable to sign a club-record contract.
“In the case of Isak, I may have even been interviewed earlier this year last year about the possibility of discussions taking place behind the scenes about how best to manage Alexander Isak,” injury expert Ben Dinary told the Liverpool Echo.
“Do we need to go under the knife? There will be a point where they will consider it and discuss it.
“Surgical intervention is done for two main reasons: one is to minimize or reduce the risk of reinjury, and we want to stop it.
“Secondly, it is to free the player and return him to his pre-injury level. Of course, these surgeries cannot guarantee a 100 per cent success rate, so this decision should not be taken lightly.”
“We know that Isaac’s situation is very minor and a bit of a problem, but he is being managed.
“(Ugo) Ekitike and Isak have come off a much interrupted pre-season program and have improved their form. That is the basis for any player going into the season ahead.”
“The more sessions or matches you miss during that block, the higher the risk of injury. Again, it would not be surprising for Isak to pick up one or two minor injuries in his first two months at Liverpool.”
“Liverpool supporters will be hoping to see more value from Isak in the second half of the season.”
