Ange Postecoglou could be linked with a return to Celtic after Brendan Rodgers abruptly resigned as head coach of the Scottish giants. Celtic announced late on Monday night that Rodgers, 52, had resigned from his role just two years into his second stint at Celtic Park. The Northern Irishman started his latest spell in June 2023, four years after first leaving the club.
Rodgers led Celtic to four Scottish Premiership titles, but after nine games this season, Boyes leaves league leaders eight points behind Hearts. Celtic suffered a 3-1 defeat at Hearts on Sunday. In a statement, the club said: “Celtic Football Club can today confirm that Football Manager Brendan Rodgers has tendered his resignation. The club has accepted the offer and Brendan will resign with immediate effect.”
“The club is grateful for Brendan’s contribution to Celtic during two very successful periods at the club. Brendan leaves Celtic grateful for the role he has played during the club’s continued period of success and we wish him further success in the future.”
“The process to appoint a new permanent manager is underway and the club will update supporters on this matter as soon as possible. We are pleased that former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill and former Celtic player Sean Maloney have agreed to take charge of Celtic’s first-team affairs during this interim period. Further details will be confirmed shortly.”
Former Tottenham manager Postecoglou has already been linked with a return to the club. Just last week, former Celtic striker Chris Sutton hinted at the possibility on BBC Radio 5 Live as pressure mounted on Brendan Rodgers.
Sutton said, “It could happen, I mean, would you want to see him come back? Yeah, eventually, why not? I really enjoyed Engiball.”
He added: “Well, I think Brendan will be leaving at the end of the season, but if[Postecoglou]is available for next season, I would love to see Big Ange come back.”
“He is well-respected at Celtic and his work is fantastic. Ange Ball, what a brand of football.”
Postecoglou was brutally sacked by Nottingham Forest earlier this month, leaving the club after just 40 days in charge. The Australian played just eight games before his tenure came to an abrupt end.
The 60-year-old, who led Spurs to a stunning Europa League win in May, won two Premiership titles, two Scottish League Cups and a Scottish Cup during his time at Celtic.
