Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has huge confidence in the club’s two summer signings after the Red Devils’ win over Brighton at Old Trafford
Ruben Amorim’s desire for proven players in the transfer market already appears to be paying off. Matheus Cunha and Brian Mbeumo made key changes as Manchester United beat Brighton at home for the first time since 2022.
Cunha capped the occasion with his first goal for the club, while Mbeumo netted his fifth goal of the season as the Red Devils bounced back to record their third win. Many will not be surprised that they have such ability, as they scored a combined 35 goals in the Premier League last season with Wolves and Brentford respectively.
United splashed out £200m on the pair, bringing them to Old Trafford along with Benjamin Sesco to transform their forward options. Early indications are that it may work.
Indeed, Gary Neville believes United currently have two players who will be regular match-winners for the club. Salford City’s owners believe they have the hunger needed to take the club forward.
“With Cunha and Mbeumo, the risk was removed from the contract in the sense that they had experience of playing in the Premier League and had the hunger to deliver at a different level,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“Mbeumo looks like he’s the right guy. He’s hungry and wants to score goals. Manchester United have something to build on. Cunha and Mbeumo will win a lot of games for Manchester United.”
Neville’s Sky Sports colleague Jamie Redknapp believes United could finish as high as fifth this season. “We must not get carried away, but there is no reason why this team cannot be in the top five (in the Premier League),” he said.
“Certainly, they have that ability. But the manager, as he said, is under no illusions. It could quickly go the other way.”

Neville believes the win against Brighton was crucial for Amorim. The former United defender believes the Portuguese manager has been relieved of a lot of pressure.
He told Sky Sports: “This game showed that after what happened at Anfield last week, Manchester United couldn’t take a step back and today’s win was absolutely crucial.” “I think it was the best and most important week in the job for Ruben Amorim. I think it gave him some time.”
“I’m not saying he’s not in form, but Manchester United are moving towards the top of the league and he’s certainly feeling a lot of pressure.”
