Scott McTominay is a key player for Napoli as they aim to defend their Serie A title, but the Scotland international is reportedly keen to return to the Premier League.
Scott McTominay is fed up with his personal situation in Italy and could reportedly return to the Premier League next year. McTominay left Manchester United last year to join Napoli and has enjoyed his time on the pitch, but his time there could be cut short after two seasons.
The 28-year-old helped Napoli win Serie A last season and was a key player for Antonio Conte’s side, scoring 17 goals and providing seven assists in 46 appearances. He was named Serie A Player of the Year and is loved by Napoli fans.
His £25.7m transfer fee has been hailed as a bargain, with McTominay currently playing for a side that also includes Kevin De Bruyne and United loanee Rasmus Hojlund. However, after enjoying an excellent debut season, things got a little more difficult in 2025/26, with Napoli’s fragility exposed in midweek’s 6-2 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.
McTominay scored Napoli’s two goals in that game and also scored in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Inter Milan, returning the team to the top of Serie A. However, the Sun reports that everything is not so positive away from the pitch in southern Italy.

According to reports, McTominay is finding it difficult to cope with the scrutiny of the club’s passionate fan base. Although he lives happily with his long-term girlfriend Cameron Reading, he is reportedly frustrated at not being able to go out and do normal things without being mopped by fans in a city with only one club.
McTominay has four goals and one assist in 10 games this season, three of which came this week. His contract with Napoli runs until June 2028, meaning he will come at a hefty transfer fee, but there is no doubt that he would be an attractive offer for a Premier League side.
Naturally, Conte will not want to lose one of his best players as he looks to defend his title. McTominay’s goal in Saturday’s win over Inter underlined his importance as the team sit top of the table.

Conte said after the match: “For better or for worse, I’m enjoying the game with the players and, in my view, we played against the best team in Italy.”
“They dropped some points along the way, but their team is on a completely different level to other teams. They missed out on the Champions League final twice in the last three years because of a fluke.”
Napoli had multiple injuries, making the win even more impressive. “Maybe someone cursed us, but we keep going anyway. Inter came here today with the aim of killing us on a sporting level, because they were in great form,” added Conte.
“If you understand that moment in the campaign, you have to kill the enemy, but we weren’t going to die. Even through all those problems, we performed great.”
