Bruno Guimarães has revealed details of his horrifying plane journey, in which a window was broken and the plane was forced to turn around, but admitted he was asleep throughout the ordeal. The Newcastle star and club team-mate Joelinton were traveling ahead of an international mission when they witnessed their flight from Amsterdam to South Korea being forced to turn back due to a serious mechanical failure.
It was part of a grueling 12,000-mile journey that ultimately took them on separate planes to Seoul. Guimarães helped Brazil defeat South Korea before being shocked by Japan, and later admitted that he was so fast asleep that he didn’t notice the emergency comeback at all until everything became clear.
He revealed: “Two windows broke midway through the plane. We couldn’t stop because we were in the air, so we had to fly back. So we lost a few hours. From Amsterdam to Amsterdam… I’ve never seen anything like this before.”
“I was sleeping. I woke up and said, ‘Two hours until I get back to Amsterdam?'” I had no idea. But after they explained to me they said it was moving a lot during the flight. It wasn’t scary. Afterwards, I realized that I had done it for a while. But it was fine during the flight. ”
It was Guimarães who scored Newcastle’s dramatic last-minute goal as they defeated Fulham at St James’s Park on Saturday.
The midfielder missed a golden chance in the second half, his header from close range hitting the top of the bar, but he was perfectly placed to score at the last moment.
The focus now shifts to defending the Carabao Cup title. Eddie Howe’s side host Tottenham in the North East this week and the Brazilian midfielder announced his team’s determination.
“This means a lot. We want to continue making history. We haven’t won in 70 years, but we can win two games in two games. It’s a big possibility, a big chance, so we don’t want to miss it. It’s a big game for us, so I hope we’re ready to take the game in our favor,” he said.
“This is a big moment, even more important because we won last season. We want to do it again and continue to make history against a great team that is very focused.”
Guimarães lifted the trophy at Wembley after the win over Liverpool, making history as Newcastle’s first captain to lift the trophy in 70 years.
