Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim spoke about new goalkeeper Senne Ramens ahead of Saturday’s Premier League home match against Brighton.
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has admitted he is “a bit surprised” by the impact goalkeeper Senne Lamence has had since making his debut.
Lamence first showed his mettle against Sunderland before the October international break, and followed that up with a fine performance against Liverpool.
The 23-year-old’s long goal kicks proved to be a game-changer in both of United’s victories. He was also praised after the game for his crucial save to deny Alexander Isak in the first half at Anfield.
When asked whether he was surprised by Lamence’s impact in Friday’s game against Carrington, Amorim confessed: “I think a little bit. It’s a difficult time for our club and there’s all the speculation surrounding the goalkeeper and he’s not a young player, but he’s still young.”
“He dealt with the pressure really well. He was really calm and defended really well. The importance of kicking the ball with both feet is very important these days, especially when you have to play with Liverpool in a more direct style. I’m a little surprised, but I was expecting a talented player. But, admittedly, I was a little surprised,” reported the Manchester Evening News.

Amorim went on to comment on his team’s direct approach, adding: “I think you can see (the progress) if you watch every game. That game was different. If you have to pick a team that can control the game with the ball, it’s City or against Arsenal at the end of the game. Every team has to adapt and we have to adapt too.”
“Against Liverpool we struggled to maintain long possessions, but going against Arsenal it was completely different. Sometimes it’s the environment and that’s the part we miss in the beginning.
“Some players in different positions give us a more direct play than playing with the ball. We want to play with a different style. Our style is different, but I’m really happy that we adapted to the games we win. Sometimes we struggle, but there are things we can do to win games and that’s really important. If you evaluate our eight games, you’ll see clearly what kind of games we want to play.”
Arne Slott moaned about United’s tactics, but Amorim refused to bite at the Liverpool manager’s comments. “Liverpool is in the past. I don’t want to comment,” he said.
“That’s not important. It’s important to try to understand what Fabian (Hürzeler) said, which is what will happen (against Brighton). I understand everything and I’m really happy that the team can play a different game.”
“It was an important win, but I was the first one to say we need to play with the ball more. I don’t care what Slot says or what people say about our team.”
“I can look at a game and say we can do more, we need to do better going forward, but sometimes you have to adapt to the game. So I don’t need anyone to judge my team. I can judge my team and it’s clear that we should play with the ball more and that’s what we’re going to go for in this game.”
“We always talk about that (turning point), but it’s connected to another question of how we face the competition. Just thinking about it, the most important thing is that we perform on the field and we’re going to give it our all,” Amorim said.
“If you talk too much about turning points, things can get worse. Let’s take it naturally. We won two games, but it’s not a big deal. It should have come sooner. Let’s go to the next game. It’s going to be really, really difficult to play against Brighton. Let’s try to perform better than we did against Liverpool.”
“Let’s wait for the game. Especially when you look at our wins this year, it’s got to be a lot about attitude. It’s not that the guys don’t want to win or don’t want to run. Sometimes it’s getting harder, but sometimes you have to force them to do the basics.”

“If we can do that, we are closer to winning more football games, but if you look at Brighton and see how they played, any team that presses from a bit higher up would struggle and they won that game.”
“So we have to be ready for all these things. It’s not only against top teams like Chelsea and Liverpool, but also against really strong opponents, and you have to be really focused and really smart to play these kinds of games.”
