Arsenal are top of the Premier League after eight games, but Jamie Carragher believes one Manchester City star is Arsenal’s biggest threat to winning the title.
Jamie Carragher believes Manchester City striker Erling Haaland poses the biggest threat to Arsenal’s Premier League title ambitions. The Gunners currently sit top of the table after eight games, four points behind Liverpool and three points behind City.
Mikel Arteta’s side took advantage of Liverpool’s poor form and the Reds suffered three consecutive defeats. Despite Liverpool spending a huge £450m in the summer, bringing in the likes of Hugo Ekitike, Jeremy Frimpong, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, Carragher believes City will be Arsenal’s more serious challenge to the title.
In his column for the Telegraph, Carragher wrote: “Arsenal went into this season worried that Liverpool were the major obstacle to ending their 21-year title wait. Now their biggest fear may be Erling Haaland.”
“Arsenal have the best squad of contenders and while Liverpool have well-documented problems to solve, Manchester City have the most influential players and dynamic attackers.
“The Norwegian is the biggest reason why Josep Guardiola’s side have a great chance of regaining the title. Without him, City’s most realistic aim would be to finish in the top four.”

“I stand by my claim that Haaland is the greatest goalscorer England has ever seen.”
Norway international Haaland has scored in 12 consecutive games for club and country, equaling the record set by Cristiano Ronaldo during his time at Real Madrid (first in the 2014-15 season and second in April 2018). Haaland has already scored 11 goals in just eight Premier League games this season.
“Usually when a team challenging for a title looks reliant on one footballer, that’s a cause for concern,” Carragher added. “Guardiola will feel blessed. Haaland is very good and can make a difference every time he plays.
“He is the most lethal finisher of this generation, which is why he is already worthy of being compared to legends of the past.”
The Anfield legend went on to suggest that Haaland deserves to be talked about in the same breath as Thierry Henry and Ian Rush, citing his incredible goalscoring record as the catalyst for City’s trophy-laden success.
He said: “That’s why great players like Henry and Ian Rush are revered as part of legendary teams, but it can be argued that their goalscoring records carry more weight, even though Henry is a very different attacking profile to the rest.”
