Liverpool manager Arn Slott was hit with another problem on Saturday night after Curtis Jones was sent off injured during the 3-2 defeat at Brentford. The Reds are already without the injured Ryan Gravenbirch, while Alexis Mac Allister has been relegated to the bench at the G Tech Stadium due to a decline in form and fitness. Jones’ injury further limits the Dutchman’s progress in midfield.
Jones, who was playing alongside Dominik Szoboszlai in midfield, had to be substituted in the second half due to an apparent groin injury and was replaced by Rio Ngmoha. Despite his past heroics with Newcastle, Ngmoha was unable to turn Liverpool’s tide in a 3-2 defeat in west London.
Liverpool have now lost four straight in the Premier League, following recent wins against Crystal Palace, Chelsea and Manchester United. Arne Slott’s champions won the Champions League away in midweek by defeating Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1. However, domestically, their title defense has virtually ended and their struggles continue.
A dismal Slott said after the match: “It was another disappointing result and performance today. We conceded a goal in five minutes again. So, yeah.”
“If you want to win a football match, conceding three goals is too many. The first goal we conceded was a set piece and if we conceded it was expected. The second goal we conceded was a counter-attack, which they are good at, and we didn’t defend well at all. In the second half we couldn’t get a result because of penalties.”
“What I have to do is look at what we did wrong and what we did well. I have a clear idea of what we have to improve on today. It wasn’t like that in the other games we lost, but each time it was a little different. Today we didn’t do the basics well. That was the main thing we have to improve on after watching this game.”
