The non-league match was temporarily suspended due to a medical emergency in the stands and players from both groups were removed from the pitch. The incident occurred during the second half of the FA Trophy match between Harborough Town and Rushden & Diamonds. Harborough scored twice before half-time and left a pile on the opposition heading into the second half.
Immediately after the match resumed, a medical accident occurred in the stands and the match was suspended. The referee stopped play in the 51st minute, and Rushden and the Diamonds posted on X (formerly Twitter): “There has been an incident in the stands, the match has to be suspended.” Eight minutes later, another update read: “Due to an ongoing medical emergency in the stands, players have been escorted off the pitch.”
The match was finally allowed to continue after a delay of approximately 19 minutes. Rushden and Diamonds posted: “The players returned and the game resumed in the 51st minute.”
Harborough doubled their advantage with two further goals within 20 minutes. The visitors pulled one back late in the game, but it wasn’t enough to spark a remarkable comeback.
It’s not uncommon in soccer for games to be postponed due to medical emergencies in the stands.
A similar incident occurred at Selhurst Park last month, causing the match between Crystal Palace and Liverpool to be halted for nearly seven minutes.
Dominik Szoboszlai and Daniel Muñoz discovered the incident in the home end and informed staff at both clubs. Referee Chris Kavanagh paused the game and medics rushed in to assist the sick fan.
Once the incident had been dealt with, medical staff returned across the pitch and the stadium erupted in applause.
