Mason Greenwood could stage a surprise reunion with Marcus Rashford, which could benefit his former club Manchester United, it has been reported. Greenwood is currently scoring goals as a hobby at Marseille, where he will join permanently in the summer of 2024. He has scored six goals in just eight league games, four of which came in one game.
The former United man came under fire during Marseille’s 6-2 win over Le Havre earlier this month. Greenwood took the lead with a penalty in the first half and added three more goals in nine minutes. His decision could reportedly have far-reaching implications regarding potential future transfers.
According to The Sun, Barcelona FC scouts were watching Greenwood in the stands and were impressed by his brilliant performance. The 24-year-old could be reunited with Rashford at the Camp Nou if he decides to leave next summer.
The latter is currently on loan at Barcelona, with an option to buy him at the end of the season for around £26.2m. Rashford has enjoyed some quality days with the Catalan powerhouse and a permanent deal appears to be a real possibility.
Meanwhile, Greenwood has been linked with a big move following his clinical performance at Marseille. United will benefit from the sale as they will be entitled to 50% of any future transfer fees.
Barcelona have reportedly been tracking Greenwood since he was loaned to Getafe last season. Earlier this year, it was reported that he was homesick in France, despite living there with his partner Harriet Robson and their two young daughters.
He was previously regarded as one of Europe’s most promising players after breaking through United’s youth ranks and emerging at the top level.
Greenwood’s career came to a halt in 2022 when he was charged with attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive conduct. The charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service the following year.
United made the decision to release him after continuing their own internal investigation and following backlash from fans, women’s support groups and staff.
Greenwood made 33 appearances and scored eight goals for Getafe before being sold to Marseille in a deal worth around £27.6 million. Marseille Mayor Benoît Payen was displeased at the time, calling the move “disgraceful”.
In his first year in charge, Greenwood helped the French giants finish second in Ligue 1 and qualify for the Champions League. He ended up scoring 21 league goals, joining PSG forward Ousmane Dembele as joint top scorers.
