From 2023, fewer and fewer members of Manchester City’s treble-winning squad are still at the club, with many moving on to pastures new or, in the case of Scott Carson, hanging up their boots.
Erling Haaland has sent a heartwarming message to former Manchester City goalkeeper Scott Carson after he announced his retirement. Carson, 40, spent six years at the Etihad before being released by City in the summer when his contract expired.
The goalkeeper only made two appearances for the Citizens, but he helped them win an astonishing 11 trophies, including the treble in 2023. Pep Guardiola always held him in high esteem and tried to be as close to the team as possible on match days to provide his wealth of experience.
After making his debut for Leeds United in 2004, Carson played for 10 clubs throughout his 21-year professional career. The shot-stopper also won four England caps.
On Thursday, Carson announced his retirement on social media, having been a free agent since July. “After an incredible journey between posts, it’s time to hang up the gloves,” he posted on Instagram.
“Football has given me everything: memories, friendships and moments I will never forget. Thank you to all my teammates, coaches, fans and club who have been a part of my journey. It has been a huge honour.”

Carson’s former teammates, including Haaland, flocked to the reply section to send congratulatory messages to Carson. The City superstar wrote: “I miss my friends.”
When Carson left the Etihad, Haaland said, “He is the kind of teammate that every team needs. Good luck in your new chapter.”
Former City right-back Kyle Walker added: “It’s been a pleasure for years to see a legend enjoy his retirement and we’ve made some good memories along the way.”
Jack Grealish, currently on loan at Everton, said: “CAT. An incredible career.”

Several former City players, including Ederson and Fernandinho, used the goat emoji to show their love for the 40-year-old. Guardiola is likely to be asked about Carson’s retirement on Friday when he speaks to the media during Sunday’s match against Aston Villa.
Previously, the city manager spoke glowingly about Carson. After making his first Champions League appearance with City in March 2022, Guardiola praised: “We’re happy. He’s very important to us behind the scenes.
“His chemistry with Ederson and Zach Steffen is fundamental in the locker room. People listen to what he says. He made the biggest save (of the game).”
Carson has a 19-year-old son, Hayden, who will join the Timberwolves. The defender is currently on loan at National League North side Chester.
