Michael Owen wants to give Ruben Amorim the chance to succeed at United, but blames a ‘toxic’ environment holding players back
Michael Owen has told Manchester United bosses to maintain faith in Ruben Amorim.
Amorim spent most of this season fighting to keep his job after a series of disastrous results. However, the Portuguese coach got a much-needed breather last weekend with an impressive win over champions Liverpool.
And former England, Liverpool and United striker Owen believes Amorim is the right man to lead the English giants back to greatness.
Owen told Sky Bet: “Ruben Amorim could be the man to lead Manchester United for many years to come. When Erik ten Hag was manager, I said from the beginning that I didn’t see it. I didn’t agree with his words or his style of football.”
“But as for Amorim, I like what he says and his principles. With time, investment and stability, he can succeed. Some huge managers have failed at that club in the last 10 years, so at some point you have to stop cutting and changing and stick with someone.”

“The club has changed everything, from the manager to the facilities to the staff to the boardroom. Now they need stability and time to get it back on track.”If given the chance, that’s what Amorim can bring. ”
Meanwhile, Owen insists one of United’s big problems remains the club’s inability to develop its players due to a “toxic” environment.
He added: “There’s something there (players who struggle at Manchester United but are successful elsewhere).”
“Can you name me a player who joined Manchester United in the last 10 years and stayed and got better, or left and got worse? I can’t.
“But you can name people who went in a different direction. It’s not a coincidence. The environment just wasn’t right. On the other hand, look at Liverpool.
“Players who were once thought to be average have become world class. When things are going well at the club, everything flows, but when it’s detrimental it drags everyone down.
“United had great players like Paul Pogba, Angel Di Maria and Alexis Sanchez, but when they arrived they were world class and looked half the player in a United shirt. It was a tough place for players to flourish.”
