Arsenal reaffirmed their status as one of the favorites to win the competition as they defeated Atletico Madrid at the Emirates on Tuesday night, with Victor Goqueres scoring twice.
Victor Gokeres has put an end to his barren run in front of goal and set his sights on winning a trophy. Arsenal established themselves as genuine Champions League contenders by defeating Atletico Madrid with an incredible four-goal onslaught at the Emirates.
Gunners striker Gokeres, a £64m summer signing from the club, scored his first goal in the 600th minute, with Gabriel and Gabriel Martinelli also scoring three minutes later to add to the lead.
“We want to win trophies. That is our desire and the most important thing. And of course we want to contribute and score goals,” Gokeres said.
“It’s very good to score four goals and get another clean sheet. We’re always pushing forward. We do the right thing when we defend and when we get our chances we’re very strong to take them.”

“Both of my goals were great. I always try to do my best, work hard and contribute in different ways, and the goals will come sooner or later.”
Gokeres also promised goals would come, especially as he wears Arsenal legend Thierry Henry’s famous No. 14 jersey. “To be honest, it feels really good. There are a lot of goals in this shirt. It feels great,” Swedish star Gökeres told CBS.
“To be honest, there weren’t that many jersey numbers available, but when number 14 became available, it was a huge honour.”
Gunners manager Mikel Arteta said: “He’s made us a better team. I think we’ve become more unpredictable. He’s very physical, he’s open, his face is attractive to everyone. The way he presses the ball, the way he keeps possession is phenomenal.”
“I think he deserves the award because, apart from scoring in the last few weeks, there was no debate about everything we saw in terms of what he brought to the team and how much he contributed to the team in a number of areas.
“It was about belief in himself, keeping him in a state of mind where he could play freely and enjoy himself. Again, that was one of those two goals, and like you said, he had a big smile on his face.
“His teammates have seen it in the photos and videos and they are all very happy for him, because he fully deserved the award.”
