The Italy international has emerged as one of the Premier League’s best midfielders and is thriving on Tyneside under manager Eddie Howe.
Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali secretly signed a contract extension last year during the gambling ban, but is set to pen a new contract at St James’ Park.
Italian midfielder Tonali has performed well for the Magpies earlier in the season and talks are expected to take place with Tonali’s agent and new sporting director Ross Wilson. And Thun chiefs are now relaxed into talks about his long-term future after his current contract was secretly extended last year.
As first reported by the Daily Mail, Tonali’s contract was due to expire in 2028, but was extended until 2029 with an option for another year until 2030. He signed the deal as the Premier League side, who beat Benfica in the Champions League on Tuesday night, defended the former AC Milan midfielder during his £55m gambling ban.

Tonali was linked with a return to his home country in recent windows, with both Juventus and Milan. But neither can afford what Newcastle want from their players, who are also happy on Tyneside.
“You never know what will happen, but I want to tell everyone that it is possible,” Tonali said earlier this month about a possible return to Italy.
“I’m not closing the door to Italy. Italy is my country. Maybe not now because I found my balance at Newcastle, but the league is getting better and better and the level of the team is increasing.”
Tonali developed under Eddie Howe, part of the Magpies’ strong midfield core, linking up with captain Bruno Guimarães and Brazilian powerhouse Joelinton in the engine room.

Tonali has performed extremely well since returning from his gambling ban, with Paul Scholes recently praising his form and claiming he could be the best midfielder in the Premier League at the moment. Scholes said: “I love Tonali from Newcastle. Yeah, he can run. He was great. Very good.”
“I think Declan Rice can score goals, but I don’t think he can score enough. I prefer Tonali.”
Thun manager Howe has also made it clear that he believes Tonali is an essential part of his team as they aim to win last season’s Carabao Cup and finish in the top five.
Howe said: “Technically he is an outstanding player. To see his technical ability, we want him to win the ball more. We also need more of a goal threat to play as a number eight.”
