Chelsea legend Frank Lampard has had a heated argument with Portsmouth manager John Mousinho as Lampard’s Coventry City look to get off to a strong start to the season.
Coventry City manager Frank Lampard was involved in a violent scuffle with Portsmouth manager John Mousinho on the touchline on Tuesday night. Lampard is currently enjoying an impressive run with the Sky Blues, who are top of the Championship.
The former Chelsea midfielder arrived at Coventry in November 2024, replacing the hugely popular Mark Robins. Lampard faced an uphill battle in his early days at the club, with fans uneasy over the decision to sack Robins, who had led the club to a play-off final and FA Cup semi-final over the past two years.
However, the 47-year-old will be sure to impress many supporters with Coventry’s impressive start to the 2024-25 season. His passion on the touchline will no doubt be popular with the club’s fan base after he was filmed arguing with Mousinho during Tuesday’s match at Fratton Park.

The incident occurred midway through the first half of the game against Portsmouth, when the two managers appeared to be at odds after Pompey claimed he should have been awarded a penalty. Referee Gavin Ward did not point to the spot and the score remained 0-0 on the south coast.
The two managers continued to discuss the incident and were even seen arguing. Mousinho appeared to be unhappy with fourth official Stephen Martin, but Lampard took issue with it.
The two men were separated by Martin, and reporters at the ground said there was a lengthy altercation.
Tuesday’s incident is not the first time Lampard and a fellow manager have been involved on the touchline. The Englishman, who also managed Derby, Chelsea and Everton, famously slammed then-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in 2020, saying: “It’s bullshit to exaggerate the fact that the only league title we’ve won so far is that!”
This incident caused a stir on the internet and remained a hot topic among fans for a long time. However, the former England star later expressed regret over the heated exchange with Klopp.
Lampard also revealed parts of the exchange in which he had no regrets whatsoever, saying he regretted that the silence in the stadium caused by pandemic rules allowed his words to be heard by the public.
Speaking to the Optus Sport Football Podcast in December 2022, the then-Everton manager admitted: “I have to be careful about saying I’ll never do it again, because if I say it, it could come back. I regret my words, I don’t regret my passion, and I probably regret not having fans in the stadium to drown out the noise, because these things do happen and we’ve seen them happen.”
Lampard admitted the high-stakes nature of the game may have contributed to the violent reaction, with Liverpool in a celebratory mood while Chelsea’s side battled for a top-four spot. The former Derby manager acknowledged the immense pressure that top managers face, but admitted he could have controlled his emotions better.
“When you meet other managers, you appreciate the passion and you understand the pressure. And the reality of that game was we were fighting for the last three games or whatever it was to be in the Champions League places,” he said.
“Liverpool were in party mode because they were to be awarded the Premier League trophy after the game, so it was a high-pressure game for us. Maybe that’s just my personality and I have to be more in control sometimes.”
