Liverpool 1-2 Man UTD: Harry Maguire scores in the final minutes of a restless game at Anfield, handing the reigning Premier League champions their fourth straight defeat.
Liverpool’s arch-rivals celebrated as Harry Maguire’s killer move handed Manchester United a famous victory as they conceded a fourth successive defeat to the Premier League champions.
The visitors took the lead less than two minutes later through Brian Mbeumo, but Michael Oliver’s failure to stop play while Alexis Mac Allister was out with a head injury led to a controversial atmosphere surrounding the Cameroonian forward’s goal.
Gakpo hit the crate at least three times as Liverpool struggled to level the game, while Senne Lamence also held firm at several key moments to keep United in the lead. However, as time passed, Gakpo finally stopped being denied.
He was in the right place at the right time to deflect a low cross from substitute Federico Chiesa past Lamence. But that was just the setup for Maguire, who broke Liverpool’s hearts with a goal in the 85th minute.

Giorgi Mamadashvili – 6
Didn’t exude confidence at times. Mbeumo’s goal, brought down at his near post, might have been better.
Connor Bradley – 5
He was selected ahead of Szvoszlai and Frimpong. He didn’t do anything majorly wrong, but it wasn’t a performance that would put pressure on his competitors either.
Ibrahima Konate – 6
He came on with a runner to play Mbeumo onside for United’s first goal, but was Liverpool’s best defender in a difficult first half. Caught a late winner.
Virgil van Dijk – 6
Mbuemo broke the deadlock by ghosting in behind the Liverpool captain, but he will know he should have done better.

Milos Kerkes – 5
At half-time, Jamie Redknapp described the game as “nervous”. He looks like a shell of the player who shone for Bournemouth last season but struggled at times with Amad.
Ryan Gravenbirch – 6
His influence grew and it was a tense moment when he went down with an injury in the second half. He was sacrificed as Liverpool chased him.
Dominik Szoboszlai – 6
A modest but steady start by the Hungarian star player. With Liverpool chasing him, he moved to right-back.
Alexis Mac Allister – 5
There is another player who is struggling to reach the heights of last season. It wasn’t his best game before he was replaced.
Mohamed Salah – 5
He has been Manchester United’s chief executive for the past few years, but not here. He missed a great chance when he fired wide at the back post just after the end. Another blank.
Kodi Gakpo – 7
The best attacker in Liverpool’s history. The woodwork gave them deserving goals at least three times before scoring late, but then they missed a second tying goal.
Alexander Isaac – 5
Slott said the time had come to judge his £125m, Liverpool’s biggest ever contract, but he had failed to impress on the big stage. It wasn’t his finest hour.

Curtis Jones – 6
He was introduced into the game and made an impact as Liverpool chased him down.
Florian Wirtz – 6
He was on the bench for the second consecutive game. It didn’t spark Liverpool’s famous comeback, but it was involved.
Hugo Ekitike – 6
It injected a sense of urgency into Liverpool’s front line. If you don’t take into account your previous display, you might feel like you’re in trouble.
Federico Chiesa – 6
Although he started the season as Liverpool’s forgotten man, he made a big impact again here by teeing up Gakpo as his first leveler.
Jeremy Frimpong – N/A
He came on as a substitute in the second half as Liverpool chased the match.
