Ruben Amorim suggested Manchester United players lacked composure despite the Red Devils’ dramatic win over Liverpool. Harry Maguire was the hero for the visitors as the defender smashed in a late header to snatch all three points. Brian Mbeumo opened the scoring after just 61 seconds, but Kodi Gakpo’s equalizer in the second half gave Liverpool hope.
The result marked United’s first win at Anfield since 2016, and the first time they have won back-to-back league titles under Amorim. However, he was not completely satisfied with his players and accused them of losing their composure in the second half when Liverpool dominated. Amorim also made it clear he has no intention of basking in the glory of defeating Liverpool ahead of a tough game against Brighton.
“I think it was the biggest win of my time at Manchester United. Today it means a lot but tomorrow it won’t mean much. It’s three points so it’s a good win,” he told Sky Sports after the final whistle.
“We fought for every ball. We lost our composure in the second half, but the spirit was there. That’s the most important thing. With spirit you can win any game. It was a good day. I’m worried about Brighton now.”
When asked how United were able to beat an unexpected Liverpool side, Amorim replied: “We watched the game and knew how important our set-pieces were and that the more experienced players came on early.
“Every time we play well in this environment, if we block well first, you can feel the defense spin, and you can feel it in our stadium and all the big teams as well. It’s a good win.”
“This whole week will give us more confidence and give our fans joy. They deserve it and it’s in our hands. This is the past and now it’s time to look to the future.”
Meanwhile, manager Arne Slott hinted in his post-match interview that Liverpool were struggling to cope with United’s defensive tactics.
“It’s always difficult to play against a team that defends with a low block and plays mainly long balls,” the Reds manager said. “When you have one of our guys on the floor and you’re down one after a minute, it makes it even harder.
“If you had told me before the game that we would have created as many chances against low blocks and against so many long balls, I would not have expected us to lose, but we did it.
“We had plenty of chances to score multiple goals, but then again we conceded two goals, one of which was a set piece.”
