It has been announced that former Everton, Real Madrid and Feyenoord forward Royston Drenthe has been rushed to hospital after suffering a stroke.
Former Premier League footballer Royston Drenthe has been rushed to hospital after suffering a stroke.
The 38-year-old suffered a medical emergency on Friday and was immediately taken to hospital.
The Dutchman’s current condition remains unclear, but it is reported that Drenthe is receiving extensive treatment from medical professionals and is expected to make a “smooth recovery”.
The cause of stroke has not yet been determined.
FC De Leveren released a statement saying: “Last Friday, Royston Drenthe suffered a stroke. Drenthe is currently receiving careful treatment and is in good condition. The team and officials wish him a smooth recovery.”
“Mr. Royston’s family is asking for peace and privacy during this time so that we can provide him with the support and space he needs to recover.”

Drenthe broke onto the scene at Feyenoord as a fleet-footed left winger before moving to Real Madrid in 2007 for £12.1 million. He was loaned to Spanish club Hercules in the 2010/11 season and Everton in the 2011/12 season, remaining at the Santiago Bernabéu until 2012, although he only made 65 appearances.
During his time at Goodison Park, Drenthe scored four goals in 27 games.
After his contract with Real Madrid expired, he moved to Russian side Alania Vladikavkaz, but spent less than 12 months there before returning to England and completing his move to Reading.
Drenthe then played for Sheffield Wednesday, before going on to play for Kayseri Ercespor, Baniyas, Sparta Rotterdam, Kozakken Boys, Racing Murcia and Real Murcia before finishing his football career.
He will retire in November 2023 after a 17-year professional career. “The realization that this is the end is definitely hard to swallow,” he told ESPN at the time.
But Drenthe was planning his next step. He added: “I’ll think about that next week. I don’t want to be a coach anyway, but something that has to do with technical policy, that seems like something to me.”
“Right now I’m focused on working in television. I have some really fun new projects lined up.”
