Koby Mainu has endured a tough start to the season at Manchester United and has been stopped by Ruben Amorim, but the 20-year-old hasn’t given up on his World Cup dreams
Manchester United’s rising star Koby Mainu is facing a difficult period in his fledgling career. The 20-year-old midfielder was hailed as the next big thing after his impressive performances for England at Euro 2024, but he has been left out of manager Ruben Amorim’s squad.
Despite his versatility on the pitch, Mainu has not started a single Premier League game this season, making only five substitute appearances and playing just 113 minutes.
The young talent had expressed interest from clubs such as Napoli and Real Madrid, who were hoping to land him on loan during the summer transfer window, but his request was rejected. Mirror Football delves into Mainoo’s current predicament, including offers from England and his behavior off the pitch.

Lee Carsley extends an olive branch
During Euro 2024, Mainu played a central role in the Three Lions’ midfield and contributed to their advancement to the final. He played in all four finals, including the final in which England lost 2-1 to Spain.
However, he is currently not being considered by manager Thomas Tuchel due to his lack of playing time for United. Despite this setback, Mainu still hopes to be included in next year’s World Cup squad and Kearsley has offered him the chance to join the youth team.

Asked if Mainu and fellow absentee youngster Adam Wharton would be considered for the under-21 squad, Carsley said: “No, they’re definitely on the table.” Neither player was selected for England during the October international break.
“They’re in the senior ranks,” he continued. “I think it’s fair to say they’re more senior than the 21-year-olds. But I think there’s always a choice.”
Response after snub
Despite missing out on his call-up in October this year, Mainu has confirmed that he remains in top physical form. During his international break, he posted a photo on Instagram showing his progress in the gym.
This will please the boss, Amorim, and prove that even in the face of some disappointments, the spirits of the Mainu will not be allowed to sink.
With a number of midfield stars on international duty, Maynou could be available when United travel to Anfield on Sunday.
Carrington’s development
Further evidence of how Mainu is dealing with declining approval ratings has come to light through Fabrizio Romano. The journalist discussed Mynu on his YouTube platform.
Romano made a loan application over the summer but suggested Mainu was not causing any disruption for United. He continues to show dedication in his training sessions and is determined to establish himself at the club he has loved since childhood.
It was also highlighted that the Stockport-born midfielder never pushed for a permanent exit from Old Trafford. This shows that his preferred future lies in Manchester, but he must secure a place before the World Cup.
Former Liverpool star criticizes
Some feel that Amorim was right to leave Mainu out of the starting lineup despite his potential. Steve Nicol, who played for Liverpool in the 1980s, believes Maynou is great in possession but his defensive contribution is terrible.
“In my opinion, Mainu is great when he has the ball at his feet, but he doesn’t do a good enough job when the opponent has the ball. In fact, he doesn’t do anything,” he told ESPN.
“He doesn’t stop people from getting into Man United’s back four. And the fact that that’s one of the biggest problems United have and this guy still hasn’t figured it out.”
“Basically I think he was discovered, because at the end of the day if you want to play for a top club and be challenging, players have to contribute on both sides of the ball. And if there’s one thing Mainu doesn’t do, it’s contribute defensively.”
“The fact that Casemiro is starting him over consistently shows that there are problems and that he’s not as good as we thought he was when he first came on the scene.”
premier league loan interest rates
Mainu has made no secret of his desire for more game time, with multiple clubs reportedly showing interest during the summer transfer window. If Mainu’s loan request remains unchanged, these clubs are expected to get another knock in January.
According to a report from Sky Sports, Newcastle are one of a number of teams keeping an eye on Maynou’s development and could make a loan offer when the transfer window reopens.
The report also suggests Italian side Napoli maintain an interest in Mainuo and could seek to sign him again in January. Head coach Antonio Conte is said to be keen to pair Mineux with former United colleague Scott McTominay, who has improved since leaving Old Trafford.
