But six minutes later, Harry Maguire sealed a memorable win for the visitors when he headed Bruno Fernandes’ cross past Giorgi Mamadashvili.
“Today means a lot, but tomorrow it doesn’t mean much. It’s three points, so it’s a good win.”

“We fought for every ball. We lost our composure in the second half, but the spirit was there and that’s the most important thing. With spirit, you can win any game.”
“It was a good day so now I’m worried about Brighton. I’m going to enjoy it but let’s focus on Brighton.”
“We watched the game and saw how important set-pieces are and that the more experienced players come on first.
“Every time we play well in this environment, if we block well the first time, you can feel the defense spin. You can feel it in our stadium and all the big teams as well. It’s a good win.”
“It will give us even more confidence throughout the week and give joy to our fans. They deserve it and it’s in our hands.”
“This is in the past. Now it’s time to look to the future.”
The win was United’s first at Anfield since 2016.
It also secured United’s first back-to-back wins in the Premier League this season, following on from their 2-0 win over Sunderland earlier this month.
Match winner Maguire admitted United’s failure to record back-to-back wins in the Premier League was embarrassing.
“It’s really embarrassing,” he told BBC’s Match of the Day. “This is not a statistic that we should be talking about because it is an embarrassing statistic.
“Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s aim for three (wins) against Brighton on Saturday, because we’ve got to start being a bit more consistent.”
“In the last three or four years we have performed like this and then the next game we were behind again.
“We set a benchmark. There’s a lot more we can do. We were persistent there and defended for the last 30 minutes or so. We’ll analyze that.”
“The coach is aiming for perfection, so I’m sure he wants us to play better than we did in the second half.
“Great fight, great spirit, great victory, but we have to go again.”
Slots: No excuses for defeat
Liverpool have now lost their fourth consecutive game in all competitions, leaving them four points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal.
We also lost to Crystal Palace, Galatasaray and Chelsea due to our poor form.
Slott insisted there was no excuse for their recent poor form and called on his players to focus.
“You know it’s going to be difficult when you play against a United team who have a low block and come in with long balls,” he told Sky Sports. “If it’s (1-0) after a minute, it’s even more difficult.
“I think you would be more emotional if you lost a game after losing four, but there are no excuses.
“We need to focus on ourselves. We had a lot of chances and we should have scored more. We should have defended better.”
“We brought in substitutes to turn the game around and they created more chances, but we don’t have the same structure in defense and set-pieces.
“It’s a difficult moment because we know how it works in football. The important thing is that the players stick together.”
