After several rounds of negotiations, Newcastle have succeeded in signing Barnsley’s young prodigy Josh Kensington. The 15-year-old was initially targeted by the Magpies with an offer of £275,000, but a deal was eventually agreed for £350,000.
The Oakwell youth player, who stands over six feet tall and has been compared to England’s John Stones, is expected to join Newcastle’s academy later this year, barring any last-minute issues. Chronicle Live claims Newcastle had to fend off competition from Brighton, Tottenham and Manchester United to secure the youngster.
Newcastle are known to be keen on scouting promising young players from the EFL, with youth scout Paul Baker signing Trevan Sanusi in 2023 and Sam Alabi signing from Oldham Athletic.
Alabi was seen training with Benton’s first team during his international break. Regarding opportunities for young players, Howe said on Chronicle Live earlier this season:
“Every player on the pitch has that chance.”
Academy representative Steve Harper also emphasized the importance of acquiring young players from EFL clubs. Harper said: “Being in a position to compete nationally to sign such young players shows how much the club values young talent and we are really grateful for the support of our board.”
“Through the hard work of everyone involved and the support of our owners, we are now in a position to provide high-level staffing, programs and pathways for our young players to develop. The opportunity is there and it’s up to the players.”
