The Manchester United academy product was once tipped to be a future star, but is currently plying his trade at step three of the non-league pyramid after being released at the age of 20.
Callum Gribbin has been tipped to be a huge success at Manchester United. But the 26-year-old hasn’t earned the £100m fee that his academy coaches once thought he was worth.
The dynamic Salford-born midfielder joined United’s academy at a young age and was compared early on to Ryan Giggs. Liverpool and Manchester City reportedly approached him when he was 16, but he committed his future to his boyhood Premier League side, signing a four-year contract starting with a one-year scholarship.
United icon Nicky Butt heaped praise on him after his performance in the Under-19 Youth League, but Gribbin’s potential was never realized. He was released in 2019 after injury troubles and had spells at Barrow, Radcliffe and FC United of Manchester before signing for Northern Premier League side Warrington Rylands in February.
Speaking about his situation in 2024, Gribbin detailed his departure from United, claiming his academy coaches had told him he would either return as a £100m footballer or work in a fast food restaurant.
Speaking to The Athletic, Gribbin detailed what he was told when he left United. “‘Prove us wrong, you’re either going to work for McDonald’s or we’ll buy you back for £100m,'” he said.

Gribbin continued, “I definitely look at football differently now. When you’re a kid you just love it. Then when you get older you realize it’s ruthless and it’s not what you imagined it to be when you were a kid.”
“I can understand why so many people turn away from this game. I’ve never had that experience myself. I don’t think I’ve turned away from this game. But there are some cruel aspects of the game that can turn me off at times.”
“I have to take some responsibility, but I will say that I didn’t deal with myself in the best way when I was younger. I let myself down a lot at times. Towards the end of my time at United, I had a difficult time.
“I wasn’t getting a chance in the first team and I was frustrated with that. I went into self-destruction and started doing the wrong things by walking away from football.
“I was immature and I was very talented, so I guess I relied on it. I abused that talent for years. I always relied on my talent to get me through. So I think I needed a lesson to let go. I’ve grown so much. Looking back, I’m not the same person I was then.”
Four years after leaving United, Gribbin suffered a serious injury. His career was suddenly in jeopardy when he tore ligaments in his knee against Warrington Town in 2023.
His club at the time, FC United of Manchester, asked for help and Gribbin applied for funding from the PFA in a bid to save his career. It cost £7,500, half of which was paid by the PFA and Gribbin’s club funded the other half.
“If you’re at a top club and you hurt your knee, you’ll be taken care of in-house,” he admitted. “The club takes care of everything and you don’t have to worry about anything other than staying fit. But when you’re at the bottom of the table you don’t have that.”
