Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has expressed its pride and honor in helping Liverpool return to the top of English football. Owners John W. Henry, Mike Gordon and Tom Werner, celebrating 15 years as owners, said the memories made when the Reds won the Premier League title at Anfield in May will last a lifetime.
On 15 October 2010, FSG officially ended the reign of Tom Hicks and George Gillett following a High Court ruling allowing the organization then known as New England Sports Ventures to buy the club for a reduced price of £300 million, citing the financial ruin caused by the previous owners. In his 15 years in charge, the Reds have won the 2019 Champions League and two Premier League titles, as well as three League Cups, the 2022 FA Cup and their first Club World Cup in 2019.
In a comprehensive statement released on Wednesday morning, FSG shared what being Anfield’s custodians for the past 15 years has meant to them.
A statement on behalf of Henry, Werner and Gordon said: “When we first started our involvement with Liverpool, we knew we were part of something extraordinary and hoped to be able to restore such an incredibly historic organization to the standards we had previously set, but we could never have imagined exactly how the next 15 years would unfold.”
“From the outset, our main objective has been simple: to bring success back to Anfield and ensure the long-term health and stability of this great club.
“We understood the responsibility that comes with being its stewards, and we worked hard every day to respect that. We also understood the scale of the challenge, but we also recognized the potential that could be achieved if we all pulled in the same direction.
“Looking back, it has not only been a tough journey, but also an incredible adventure that we, the owners, have been privileged to be a part of.
“Two Premier League titles (one under Jurgen and one under Arne) and winning the Champions League are obvious milestones.
“We will never forget being inside Anfield earlier this year on the day we finally lifted the league trophy in front of our fans. It is a memory that will stay with us forever.”
“But there were many other moments that were just as important. Sir Kenny Dalglish took us to our first trophy in 2012. We became world champions in 2019. We won the cup double in 2022, we won the cup in 2024, we won the cup in 2024, we won the cup in 2022, we won the cup in 2024, we won the cup in 2022, we won the cup in 2024, we won the cup in 2022, we won the cup in 2024, we won the cup in 2022, we won the cup in 2024, we won the cup in 2022, we won the cup in 2024, we won the cup in 2022, we won the cup in 2024, we won the cup in 2022, we won the cup in 2024, we won the cup in 2022, we won the cup in 2022, we won the cup in 2024. League Cup Final in 2013 and back-to-back WSL titles in 2013 and 2014 under Matt Beard. Each one told a unique story about what this club meant: belief, togetherness, heart and lots of passion.
“Of course, there have been tough times. We’ve lost finals, we’ve been eliminated by close margins. Off the field, there have been times when things haven’t gone our way. We know that and we’ve learned from them. All our decisions are made with the long-term interests of the club in mind.”
“Today, we are proud of how our club has grown in every sense of the word. Our men’s team now trains in world-class conditions, our women’s team calls Melwood home once again and connects our future with history. And Anfield itself has undergone a transformation without ever losing its specialness, from the Main Stand to the new Anfield Road.
“We would also like to pay tribute to all of Liverpool’s leadership on and off the field. Their guidance, commitment and dedication have been at the heart of everything we have achieved together.”
“Liverpool Football Club means so much to so many people and we are always conscious of that. This club is part of the fabric of the city and much more. It brings together generations and communities in a truly special way. It is a privilege to be part of that story and it comes with responsibilities that we will never take for granted.”
“Today is a day to look back with gratitude, but it is also a day to remember that our work is not done yet. There is still so much ahead of us, so much to accomplish, so much to win, so many memories to make together.
“And on behalf of everyone at Fenway Sports Group, I’d like to thank all of our supporters. Thank you for making us feel welcome, for believing in this team through thick and thin, for telling us when we weren’t able to, and for showing the world what it truly means to be part of Liverpool Football Club. You never walk alone.”
