Yves Bissouma was carried off on a stretcher on Sunday night, just minutes after coming on as a substitute for Mali in a World Cup qualifier against Madagascar.
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Yves Bissouma was substituted with injury on Sunday night, shortly after making his first appearance of the season. The 29-year-old missed Spurs’ season opener with a knee problem.
However, he regained sufficient fitness during this international break to earn a call-up to Mali’s national team, playing in their second World Cup qualifier against Madagascar in two weeks. Bissouma came on as a substitute in the 66th minute at the Stade Modibo Keita, but reports from the 4-1 win suggested that Bissouma was tackled by an opponent when the ball first came to him and appeared to be injured almost immediately.
The Tottenham player was reportedly unable to leave the pitch on his own and required a stretcher to be carried off. Spurs now wait anxiously until the extent of the injury is known.

Bissouma’s knee problems have ruined his prospects of leaving Spurs this summer. The former Brighton player is currently in the final nine months of his contract with the north London club and Spurs were keen to allow him to leave, with a move to Turkey or another Premier League club also being linked.
However, nothing materialized for the midfielder and his continued lateness led to him being left out of the UEFA Super Cup squad at the beginning of the season by new manager Thomas Frank. Bissouma was also left out of the Champions League squad for the league leg of the tournament.
Last month, after the window closed, Frank said, “I have no hard feelings at all. There were none before and there are none now. Anyone can have a chance if they train well.”
“He’s just started running outside so he’s not part of the group, but from what I see every time I greet him and hang out with the players every day, he seems to be doing well.”
Currently, Bissouma appears to be suffering from a new injury. If this is an ankle problem, as post-match social media reports suggest, it is a recurring problem for the Mali international, who missed the majority of his first season at the club with a stress fracture in his left ankle that required surgery in February 2023.
Tottenham will be back in action after the international break, hosting Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday 19 October (kick-off 2pm). Ahead of the game, Spurs are in third place, two points behind leaders Arsenal.
Following the game against Villa, Spurs face Monaco in the Champions League on Wednesday (kick-off 8pm).
