There was a time when it looked like Thomas Tuchel would be the one to take the spotlight at Old Trafford. The German manager was on Manchester United’s priority list of candidates in the summer of 2024, when the Red Devils were pondering the future of Erik ten Hag.
In the end, Ten Hag continued to work at United, albeit briefly, and the three-time European champions eventually named Ruben Amorim in his place. Tuchel has found work elsewhere, becoming the first non-English coach to manage the Three Lions in more than a decade.
However, the 20-time English champion is reported to have held talks with Tuchel about the possibility of taking over at a time when United were looking for a new manager. The Sun reports that talks have taken place between the parties involved, but Tuchel is clearly unimpressed with United’s approach, forcing the Premier League side to look elsewhere.
As a result, it is reported that even if United decide to sack Amorim midway through the season, the former PSG manager will not be considered.
For the FA it was a different story. There were no problems convincing the German to take command for the 2026 World Cup cycle. But after less than a year on the job, there are already complaints that he isn’t enjoying his job as much as originally expected.
Former Chelsea ace Scott Minto told talkSPORT earlier this month: “From what I’m hearing, Tuchel isn’t particularly enjoying his job in England. We’ll have to see how the World Cup goes…if he wins. Of course he sounds excited in interviews, but he knows how to play the game.”
“I’m a Tuchel fan. I thought what he did at Chelsea was great and I had no complaints about him being England’s manager. I would have preferred Eddie Howe and that’s OK. That said, I don’t think Eddie Howe came out last night and criticized England fans.”
“I don’t think it was a play (from Tuchel to the sending-off angle). I think it’s just him being himself. He’s who he is. He’s a very straightforward person and believes in himself. He’s one of the top managers in the world, so that’s natural.”
Tuchel came under fire for criticizing the atmosphere at Wembley Stadium during England’s 3-0 friendly win over Wales. Despite all the suggestions, Tuchel is almost certain to take charge of England’s World Cup next summer, with the 1966 world champions on the verge of qualifying.
