Steven Gerrard sends message to Rangers fans after being disrespected for managerial job | Soccer | Sports

Steven Gerrard has thanked Rangers supporters for their support despite emotionally refusing to return to Ibrox. The former Liverpool captain was the Scottish club’s top target to replace Russell Martin. Gerrard had traveled north of the border for talks with Rangers, with an agreement between the two sides thought to be imminent.

However, the former England midfielder pulled off a dramatic comeback at the last minute, explaining that he did not think the timing was right for his return. Gerrard is open to returning to the club in the future, but feels it is too early at the moment.

Despite his slow change of heart, he got his message across to his fan base.

According to Sky Sports, Gerrard thanked Rangers supporters for their support and wished the club well for the rest of the season.

The Scottish giants have had a disastrous start to the 2025/26 season.

Under former manager Martin, only one of their first seven league matches was secured, but their performance in Europe was similarly disappointing.

Rangers suffered a crushing defeat to Club Brugge in the Champions League play-offs and also lost in their first Europa League match.

Although a return to Rangers is currently not possible, Gerrard has indicated his desire to return to management at the earliest opportunity.

“I would like to try again someday,” he told Rio Ferdinand. “I want to change some things, improve some things and come back with a fresh mind.

“I have a few different people around me. I want to take some more challenges to do this. And that’s what I’m working on in the background right now. I have a few different ideas, a few different people around me.”

Gerrard added: “But there’s a part of me that feels there’s a bit of unfinished business in the sense that I still want to take on some exciting challenges. But I’d like some sort of challenge.”

“In an ideal world, if they were available, I’d jump. If they weren’t, I wouldn’t go back. I want to be on a team that competes to win, because I think that’s a better fit for me. I think certain jobs and certain clubs suit my style and the way I want to do things.”

Rangers are reportedly considering former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rolle as their next manager following Gerrard’s departure.
