Steven Gerrard has been heavily linked with a return to Rangers following Russell Martin’s departure from Ibrox, and former England team-mate Rio Ferdinand believes a reunion is on the cards.
If Rio Ferdinand’s words are to be believed, Steven Gerrard will return to Rangers. The former Liverpool midfielder is said to be potentially making an emotional return to Ibrox as Russell Martin’s replacement.
Martin was fired earlier this week following a disastrous start to the season. Gerrard enjoyed a great deal of success in his first spell at the club after ending a 10-year wait for a Scottish top-flight title.
Gerrard moved to Aston Villa in 2021 before moving to Al Etifaq in Saudi Arabia. Although he has been out of work since leaving Rangers earlier this year, Ferdinand believes a return to Rangers is in the cards.
The former Manchester United defender told talkSPORT: “When I interviewed him, he left me in no uncertain terms saying he wanted to be a manager, had full confidence in that and was itching to get back in right now.”
“He’s never said that to me, but I personally think, given the energy in that room, that if the Rangers came calling, he’d go. He’d at least have that conversation.”

“When you sit down with them you pick on them and understand them. If I were the owner of a football club and Steven Gerrard was sitting in front of me and I could feel the energy that filled the room, he would have the job.”
“When he was at Rangers before, he did great there. I’ve never had so many Rangers fans flood my podcast with comments. They’re all desperate for him to come on and at least have that conversation.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if Steven Gerrard is back in charge soon and Rangers are one of my main threats.”
Ferdinand’s prediction came shortly after he spoke at length with Gerrard on an episode of his podcast. And during the chat, the former midfielder revealed what he is looking for in his next job.

“I would love to try it again someday,” he said. “I want to change some things, improve some things and come back fresh.
“I have a few different people around me. I want to try a few more things to do this. And that’s what I’m working on in the background right now. I have a few different ideas, a few different people around me.”
Gerrard added: “But there’s a part of me that still feels there’s a bit of unfinished business in the sense that I still want to take on some exciting challenges. But I’m looking for some sort of challenge.”
“In an ideal world, if they become available, I’ll jump on it. If they don’t, I won’t go back. I want to be on a team that competes to win, because I think that’s a better fit for me. I think certain jobs and certain clubs suit my style and the way I want to do things.”
