WWith 72 days left until the start of the World Cup, FIFA has cleared one of the biggest uncertainties ahead of the tournament with words from President Gianni Infantino. “The Iranian national team will participate.”
The President watched the friendly match between Iran and Costa Rica (5-0) in Turkey, and during half-time he made it clear that despite the current socio-political situation, everything will proceed as previously planned.
Coach Infantino announces Iran’s participation in tournament
The president of the International Federation of Football Associations has broken his silence on speculation that the ongoing conflict between the United States and Israel could force changes to already established plans for soccer’s biggest competition.
“Iran will be in the World Cup, that’s why we’re here. We’re a very, very strong team so I’m happy. I’m very happy. I’ve seen the team, I’ve talked to the players and the coach and everything is going well,” Infantino revealed (via GOAL).
“We understand the situation. It is very complex. We are working on it and we will make sure that Iran takes part in the World Cup in the best possible conditions. Iran represents its people and they qualify according to their merit. Iran is a footballing country. We want them to play and they will also take part in the World Cup. There is no plan B, C or D. This is plan A,” he added.
The statement came amid rising tensions between Iran, the United States and Israel, which have called into question the participation of Asian national teams in the 48-team World Cup, scheduled to be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
The Football Federation of Iran (FFIRI) has raised the possibility of not taking part in the tournament for security reasons and moving the matches to Mexico. However, FIFA remains firm in its stance that the date and venue will not be changed and the original draw will be honored to advance Iran to the group stage on U.S. soil. World football’s governing body insists on separating the sport from political controversy.
“We cannot resolve these conflicts, but we have an opportunity to unite the world. Millions of fans from 48 countries come together in a spirit of peace and celebration. Our goal and mission is to unite and build bridges for everyone,” Infantino said.
According to Plan A, Iran would be placed in Group G alongside New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt, with all matches to be played on American soil.
Iran is scheduled to make their debut on June 15 against New Zealand at Los Angeles Stadium in California. They will then play against Belgium at the same venue on the 21st, and then face Egypt at Seattle Stadium in Washington on the 26th.
Undoubtedly, the coming weeks will be decisive in determining how this situation develops.
