England played in a way that called into question their World Cup qualification in a 1-0 defeat to Japan thanks to a first-half goal from Kaoru Mitoma. The Brighton star is used to playing against English opponents given his experience in the Premier League and was in the perfect position to score a counter-attack in the first half. Japan had a chance to further extend their advantage as Thomas Tuchel’s side ended the international break in very disappointing fashion.
Following their draw with Uruguay, hosts England, without Harry Kane through injury, lacked any real edge as they started without a recognized striker and suffered a defeat. Substitute Marcus Rashford’s 77th-minute shot was, surprisingly, England’s first shot on target. Morgan Rogers then fired at point-blank range. Express Sport brings you Wembley player ratings…

Although they played hard, they gave up the ball in front of Japan’s goal. Far from his best performance.
It drifted a lot and I struggled to make an impact. They tried to create chances, but lacked the decisive opening.
His pace and direct running posed at least some danger. Among England’s outstanding performers.
