The final qualifying round was held on Tuesday night, and the World Cup draw has now been completed. During this international break, European teams are competing in play-off matches as their last chance to qualify for this summer’s tournament.

The United States will join Canada and Mexico in hosting this summer’s World Cup, and an expanded version of the tournament will see the number of participating countries increase from 32 to 48, with 12 groups in total. England had already qualified for the tournament thanks to a perfect qualifying campaign, winning all eight matches.

Manager Thomas Tuchel and his team already know their three opponents, with the Three Lions in Group L alongside Panama, Ghana and Croatia. England used their international break to play two friendlies at Wembley Stadium to strengthen their preparations for the tournament, drawing 1-1 with Uruguay on Friday before losing 1-0 to Japan on Tuesday night.

Before Tuesday’s game, 42 of the 48 spots for this summer’s World Cup had already been confirmed, with the final six spots confirmed. Sweden fell behind in their bid to qualify for the World Cup, with Arsenal striker Viktor Gökeres scoring the winning goal in a 3-2 win over Poland in the play-off match against Thailand.

Turkiye defeated Kosovo 1-0 and qualified for this summer’s tournament. The Czech Republic needed a penalty shootout to beat Denmark, but Italy lost to Bosnia and Herzegovina on spot kicks, missing out on a spot in the World Cup.

The Democratic Republic of Congo put an end to Jamaica’s dreams on Tuesday night when former Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe scored in extra time to end the game 1-0. Meanwhile, Iraq defeated Bolivia 2-1 to qualify for this summer’s tournament.
