FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Jordi Alba has announced he will retire from professional football at the end of InterMiami’s run in the Major League Soccer Playoffs.
Alba revealed the news on Tuesday, three days after Intermiami held its retirement ceremony Sergio Basket. Alba had a contract with InterMiami until 2027.
“It’s time to close out a truly meaningful chapter in my life,” Alba told social media. “I decided to end my professional soccer career at the end of this season. I feel like I walked this path with every ounce of passion I had, so I will do so with full confidence in peace and happiness.
Alba, 36, came to Intermiami shortly after Messi announced he would be heading there in June 2023. Messi’s arrival led all Barcelona teammates to Baskett, Luis Suarez and Alba to join the MLS.
Alba helped Barcelona win six LaLiga titles, five Copa del Rey Trophy and the Champions League in 2015.
