Kinshasa, Congo (AP) – Street protest against the Moroccan government, Top football officials on the continent said that the plans for the Africa Cup of Nations will not be changed, partially provoked by spending on stadiums.
Morocco, which is building the world’s largest soccer stadium to co-host the Men’s World Cup in 2030, demonstrated this month in more than 12 cities by young activists.
“Morocco is Plan A, Morocco is Plan B, Morocco is Plan C,” African Football (CAF) confederation Patrice Mossepe said at a press conference after the annual meeting when asked about changes to tournament plans.
“The stadium is here, where is the hospital?” was asked in a protest promoted by an online group called Gen Z 212, named after the country’s dial code.
They protest that what they say is a lack of opportunity and underfunded health and education system, and were supported by social media posts by players from the national team, including Soshan Amrabat and Yassie Bunault.
North African countries will hold 24 team countries for four weeks for CAF starting December 21st.
“We are absolutely sure that the CAF will work together, work with the government, and work with all of Morocco to host the most successful (country cup) in the history of this competition,” says Motsepe.
