Bruno Fernandez failed to score his second penalty of the season as Manchester United lost 3-1 at Brentford on Saturday, losing 3-1 in three Premier League games.
Fernandez’s spot kick was saved in the 76th minute by Brentford goalkeeper Kaoimhin Keleher, denying what would become United’s equalizer. The Portuguese midfielder also missed a penalty at Fulham last month.
United were unable to fully recover from an early double by Brazilian striker Igor Thiago. Igor Thiago defeated the offside trap and smashed the opening goal in the eight minutes, bundled it on his 20th rebound after goalkeeper Altai Bayindeal presented a cross.
Benjamin Sesco reduced United’s deficit on the 26th with his first goal in British football, knocking home on the third attempt after Keleher was unable to cope with the pressure of a cross from Brian Mbeumo and making two saves from Sesco.
Matthias Jensen carried a shot from the edge of the area for Brentford’s third goal at rest.
United’s latest defeat has been thrown so far this season at the humble English League Cup exit after previous league defeats to Arsenal and Manchester City.
United failed to win a Chelsea victory last week, and have not recorded a back-to-back wins under Reuben Amorim since their first match last November.
There will be six more games in the Premier League in the second half of Saturday. This will open the title defense in an away match with Crystal Palace and Manchester City hosting Burnley, with leader Liverpool seeking a sixth consecutive victory.
