MANSHETER, UK (AP) — Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola described Kyle Walker as “one of the best fullbacks ever,” ranking it alongside superstars like Cuff and Javier Zanetti before the England defender returned to Etihad Stadium with Burnley on Saturday.
Walker, 35, first match against City comes after leaving the club, which has been filled with trophies for eight years as captain. He spent part of last season on loan at AC Milan before the offseason promoted Burnley.
“Absolutely,” Guardiola said Friday. Walker was asked if he should be rated as highly as right-backs such as former Brazilian International Cuff, former Argentina defender Zanetti and French Greater Trillian Torrum. “One of the best fullbacks ever.
“When I had to control that side with my winger, I slept like a baby before the match with Kyle. He was able to handle the world’s top winger with speed.”
Walker lost his position in the team, winning six Premier League titles, the Champions League against City, and six domestic cups before the standard slipped last season.
“The incredible figure in the locker room… he’s always there in good and bad moments,” Guardiola said.
“Of course, the (last) season was tough for everyone, for him, for all of us. But I don’t want to judge short-term actions. He was incredible.”
Guardiola said Erling Haaland deserves to play for City following a minor back complaint following a 1-1 draw at Arsenal.
