Night Football Game Returns to Kauai with plans to protect Hawaii’s Native Birds

For the first time since 2010, most of the high school football games in Kauai this season will take place in the evening.

That’s thanks to a new important set of spectators featured outside the stadium. Instead of watching the game, these student-biologists are trained to observe the sky of endangered seabirds.

On this country island, where a number of nightlife options set with the sun, nighttime soccer matches between three public high schools are a well-known community ritual. But as the stadium’s lights shine brightly, Newell’s Sheawater and Hawaii’s oil chicks embarking on their inauguration flights tend to track the moonlight that leads them to the sea. Birds circle artificial lights, making them confused, crashing, falling out of the sky, and making prey for dogs and wild cats easier.

The state’s education officials and counties took five years to figure out how to fulfill part of an agreement with federal environmental regulators requiring birdwatchers and wildlife biologists trained to wash the air on the stadium for the possibility of birds falling.

“It’s the only show in town on a Friday night — and it’s back,” said Jason Yoshida, executive director of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation.

Night games take place on low-risk and moderate-risk nights of bird fallout (calculation determined by US fish and wildlife officials). This will take place on all but three dates during the bird escape season, which starts on Monday and runs until December 15th. This is more than three-quarters of a 13-game season.

Night Games in Kauai in 2010 discovered that the U.S. Department of Justice had violated the county by violating the Endangered Species Species Act, and violated the Migratory Bird Treaty Act over Stadium Light, which threatened two of Hawaii’s endemic seabirds.

Conservationists say the switch to the daylighting game has benefited the birds. Footballers, parents and spectators lamented the cruel noon heat and raised concerns about health and safety. There was also a sense of loss that has become prevalent in the vibrant community gathering locations.

The newly approved game night falls to a date where the moon shines bright enough to reduce the risk of stadium lights that will disrupt the birds. Other factors used to determine risk include the fledgling pattern of the bird and the time of sunset.

“They’re a huge fan of the world,” said Diane Pereka, a ninth grade teacher at Kapaa High School.

The heat at the midday kickoff was a concern for players wearing all the pads and helmets, she said.

For the birds

A common misconception is that federal regulators have banned hosting night football games, but under a certain set of conditions, these games in Kauai have been allowed ever since May 2020 when they created a conservation plan to address the impact of bird stadium lights.

Kauai Parks and recreation director Patrick Porter said in the past he saw some of the requirements for state education officials to play at night as too much trouble. With the growth of public protests last year, county and education department officials have vowed to make greater efforts to host as many night games as possible this season.

“We heard it loudly and clearly. Grandpa and grandma, when they go to the daytime games, they’re very uncomfortable,” Yoshida said.

Football games attract large crowds at night, generating income that involves low-profile sports teams such as tennis and golf, which rely on expenses, including off-island travel. Saturday games are also challenging for families juggling competing weekend duties.

“Now, the birds definitely have res out there,” Porter said. “Night football games have been community equipment for decades.”

One of the biggest hurdles to meeting night games standards is to come up with ways to fund and organize bird monitors and wildlife biologists for game staff.

The school agreed to monitor availability, monitor confused birds and report the findings to at least eight student volunteers at each night’s game. The county paid overtime for county staff to conduct training sessions.

Students who spotted birds fallen during the game can place them in wooden boxes at hand at the stadium. The bird is then taken to the veterinarian for treatment.

This method rescues an average of 157 birds. This probably accounts for a small percentage of the total fallen seabirds, according to US fish and wildlife officials.

After abundant discovery on Hawaiian islands, Newell’s shear water populations have now appeared Almost exclusively In the mountains of Kauai.
