Marseille, France (AP) – Marseille took charge of the attack, defeating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0, knocking off the top of the League One on Monday.
In a game rescheduled after a storm warning in the southern France on Sunday, Marseille took the lead after just five minutes and never gave up.
Nayef Aguerd jumped to the best for the cross, with goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier coming out and missing, making the Moroccan centre nod to the empty net.
PSG had most of its possessions, but the home side was more dangerous and it was unlucky to go to just one at halftime.
Amin Guli’s shot crashed from the crossbar 25 minutes later. A few seconds later, another goal was ruled out offside.
The second half was a repetition of the first one where PSG had most of the ball but was unable to break the stifling Marseille defense.
“We should have won,” PSG midfielder Ilia Zabarni told broadcaster Dazen. “We controlled the game and played well. Maybe something was missing.”
Marseille celebrated with three points, even after exchanging words with the judges.
The victory brought Marseille’s fine home league to overtake three wins in three games. He scored nine points from five games and moved to sixth place.
It was the first time since December 2023 that he has held consecutive clean sheets at his League One home and held his first goal against PSG at home in his final six games.
PSG fell to second place in a joint equal to points with Monaco and surpassed that with a goal scored. Both teams have scored 12 points, similar to Lyon and Strasbourg.
Many PSG players were unable to attend the Barondoor Ceremony in Paris on Monday. Nine PSG players have been nominated for the Men’s Award.
