AMSTERDAM (AP) – Marcus Sahlam’s towering jumps and powerful headers met the corner of his teammate Hakan Chalhanor, leading Inter Milan’s Champions League campaign to a victory start.
Thuram won a 2-0 victory at Ajax on Wednesday, and a 2-0 victory at Ajax since its painful five-goal defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in the final last season.
“This is Inter,” said coach Christian Chibb, the first Champions League leader to lead the team. “A team with experience, personality and desire to bounce back from negative times.”
On the first goal in the 42nd minute, Thuram discovered he was alone at a nearby post, guiding the ball quickly towards the bottom corner of the net.
Second on the 47th, the French forward rose between the two Ajax defenders, leading the ball inside the Far Post.
The lead concluded the eventful first half of powerful Salam, which began on the bench by regular strike partner Lautaro Martinez.
Thuram was shown a yellow card on the 17th, swayed around Oliver Edvalden’s face, leaving Ajax lying on the grass.
He barely fired the Ajax goal in the 33rd, and thought he had scored a penalty when he was pulled to the ground by defender Youri Baas a minute later.
British referee Michael Oliver capsized in a video review when he was encouraged to check his fieldside monitor to confirm Thurman hugged and pulled Bath’s jersey as he moved into the penalty area.
Thuram prefers to add it to the Champions League tally when Inter hosts Slavia Prague at San Siro on September 30th.
