LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Diego Simeone said he faced repeated insults from the Anfield crowd after an angry confrontation at the end of Atletico Madrid’s Champions League match against Liverpool on Wednesday.
Atletico coach said Virgil van Dyke responded to a provocation from the crowd after scoring the stop-time goal. Liverpool wins 3-2. It caused shaming in a side job where Steward and members of Atletico’s coaching team were caught up in FRACA.
Speaking through an interpreter after the match, Simeone said, “I am humiliated for all the games,” and responded, “I am a human.”
There was a ferocious scene at the end of the game at Anfield after Atletico fought back 2-0 and lost the match in two minutes of extra time.
A massive brawl on the sideline caused the steward to try and control the situation before Simeone was eventually shown a red card by Italian judge Maurizio Mariani.
TV footage shows Simeone confronting the crowd’s fans, and the stewards are heading up to calm the situation down.
Simeone said the coach is in a place where he doesn’t have the right to “reply or respond.”
The Argentine coach hadn’t said what he received.
“I’m not going to really enter the exact nature of insults. I don’t want to be part of that discussion,” he said. “I have to stay in my place. I know what happened behind the manager’s bench. One press conference cannot solve social problems. It’s always there, so we have to live together.”
Liverpool coach Arne Slot said he was unaware of what had happened.
