FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) – Major League Soccer has suspended Intermiami forward Luis Suarez in three league matches. That means they miss out on the team’s rematch in the Heated League Cup Finals with the Seattle Souders next week.
The suspension was in response to Suarez’s field attitude, including spitting on someone after Intermiami lost the League Cup Final to the Sounders on August 31. The League Cup stopped Suarez in six future matches in the tournament.
The MLS took action despite the fact that the brawl that undermined the Inter Miami Seatl match finish was not one of the matches. The League Cup is a different competition.
Sounders coaching staff Stephen Renhardt cited the qualification by MLS for the remainder of the season for his role in the altercation, saying that the league has no guarantee that it will qualify for next season. Renhart, MLS said, “Available only in public seating areas during Seattle Sounders FC Home Matches and cannot be in or near the field of play, or around locker rooms or tunnels.”
Sounders was fined privately for misappropriation of their qualifications, MLS said.
The incident is the latest in a long line for Suarez, where he stopped three times to bite his enemy. Longtime teammate of Intermi Amister Lionel Messi Apparently he was spewed at a member of the Sounders staff. During the post-match struggle, at least one Seattle player was grabbed by his neck.
Suarez apologized last week for his actions, saying, “I was wrong and I regret it.”
