SANTiago, Chile (AP) — Argentine club Indipendipente has been disqualified from Copas Daemalicana after a violent clash involving fans at the stadium last month in a match with the University of Chile, the South American football governing body said Thursday.

More 100 people were arrested and around 20 injured. On August 20th, 16 matches were played at Livata Dres de Amica Stadium in Avelaneda, the province of Argentina’s capital Buenos Aires.

Regional football authorities also ruled that the University of Chile would advance to the quarterfinals of a continental sport in which Peru plays Arianza de Lima.

“We have decided to disqualify Club Atletico independence from this edition of the 2025 Copa Sudamelicana without excluded from future competitions,” Conmebol said.

The Argentine club will also have to pay a $250,000 fine and play the next seven home games without stadium supporters.

The University of Duchile will also have to play seven games behind closed doors and pay a $270,000 fine.

According to Argentine police, the incident began when a fan located in the upper stand tore a seat and threw a blunt instrument towards the lower section where the home fan is located.

The match stopped scores 1-1 at halftime as rival supporters continued to throw projectiles.

Just as college fans were off the stands, hooded independent supporters entered the visitor section and attacked people with sticks and metal bars.

All injured soccer fans have already been released from the hospital.
