BERLIN (AP) – Hamburger SV has returned from seven years of absence and emerged from the first game to return to the Bundesliga in a 0-0 draw at Borussia Menchenradbach.
The promoted side defended most of Sunday’s game, and often dived to deny Gladbach’s captain Rocco Leitz among other saves.
Hamburg has increased the team’s offensive threats over the past 15 minutes with Jean-Look Dompe and Yusuf Poursen. Another alternative, William Mikel Brensis, thought he had a late winner, but the goal was ruled out offside.
Hamburg was the last surviving member of the Bundesliga who played every season since the formation in 1963, and earned the nickname “der dino” until he was eventually kicked out after several shavings in 2018.
Hamburg will then face City rival St. Pauli for the Derby at home next Friday.
Gladbach signed Borussia Dortmund’s Gio Reina on Saturday, but the Americans were not included in the team.
Previously, Cologne marked his return Second Division Champion A 1-0 victory at Mainz, Paul Nebel was sent on time marks for a tactical foul to stop Jakub Kaminski. Kaminski would have achieved his goal.
The ones sent in encouragement to Cologne, who was primarily defending at the time, with Kaminsky’s strike partner Marius Butter leading the winner in the final minute.
